The Wendell Fire Department was formed on November 14, 1913 and is located at 169 East Avenue A. The building is owned by Wendell Rural Fire and collects rent from the Wendell Fire Department to house the department’s fire engines and equipment. The Wendell Fire Department has (2) full times employees (Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief), (15) volunteer fire fighters, (4) volunteer EMT’s and a chaplain.

The proven abilities of the Wendell Fire Department have resulted in the City receiving Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating of a 3. This positive rating, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the best, directly correlates to residential and commercial fire insurance rates. Currently the department is extending its outdoor training facility and training props.
